Over the past few decades it has become clear that many drugs have unanticipated uses. Thalidomide, rapamycin, and recently metformin are now being used for cancer, despite original indications in morning sickness, immune suppression, and diabetes numerous other examples exist. These uses have typically been discovered serendipitously, and there are doubtless other drugs whose anticancer uses have not been discovered.
CollabRx’s approach picks up not only targeted cancer therapies but also non-cancer therapies that may be relevant to your patient’s cancer, even when they have not been previously identified. We do this by having our scientists – experts in drug discovery and pioneers in drug repositioning - examine full genome expression and copy number variation in the context of the relevant history, to identify potential biological mechanisms of carcinogenesis. We focus on hypotheses with multiple (20-30) internal data points supporting it as well as evidence in the literature linking the pathway to cancer. We then link those mechanisms to any approved and investigational drugs that are known to target them. We present the results transparently – data, methodologies, interpretations, and the corresponding references from scientific literature — in a personal consultation. We design validation studies to further confirm as appropriate/desired, and more generally will help with anything else that will help support your treatment decisions for this patient on an ongoing basis.
This approach is most appropriate for patients who have exhausted standard of care options, or as a “plan B” in the event that happens.
